Re: WOC MTBO starts today
Looking at the results, the courses seem to have been "overplanned". Or maybe it's the heat.
Ifor has finished 21st (but it looks like 20 qualify from each of three heats
).
Em (11th) and Lucy (16th) are both through (I assume it's 30 per heat to qualify, since 60 are allowed in the final, so that's everyone who rode the heats).

Re: WOC MTBO starts today
It was hot even with an earlyish start not sure how hot but it was 38-39 acording to the car coming home afterwards. I don't think our course was too long the realy top guys prorobly have a bit more to give for tommorow when the A final is a good bit longer and considerably hillier. 37km 1350M with a target time of 105-115as oposed to todays 26km 750M It will be interesting to see if that's overplanned...
I had a good ride overall only one major problem when I was taking a conservative tarmac route and ended up faceing a one way street, which I went 3 sides of a square around costing me at least the minute I missed qualifying by which is anoying.... It was always going to be a close call for me so I guess I shoukld not be that suprised athough there is an Italian older than me easaly into the final.
I now will have the delight of going out mid afternoon for the B final but that looks to be less than todays qualifier at least but will be full on hot.

Good results by all, but why are there heats when all go through anyway?

To determine the start order for the Final? Although I must admit I don't know enough about MTBO to know whether a late start is an advantage in the same way it usually is in foot-O.

Bit rough if the course includes urban route choice options and doesn't indicate on the map which are one-way streets.

It seems to me that in many European countries bicycles appear to be able to ignore one way systems. Is it possible that Ifor lost out because he didn't know this?

Although, there do not seem to be heats for the other distances . . . .

Re: WOC MTBO starts today
Late start tomorrow will be a bad thing the sooner the beter to get a degree or two cooler.
Generaly not being first is good especialy if the ground will leave tyre marks but nothing like foot O where on most terain the latter the better.

Golf as I play it is definitely quite close to orienteering. Use of thickets, dunes, rough open, generally pick my own route to the hole not necessairly the one expected by the course setter. Occasionally find a different hole before i find the one i should be in.....
Orienteering - its no walk in the park
