JK Map Scale - Leith Hill
Whilst there has been much discussion about the British Champs, another competition has crept up on us. In the JK booklet received today it states, for Day 2 Leith Hill: "Due to the technical nature of the terrain, all courses will be using a map scale of 1:10,000". As an M55, I hope that this is the correct decision - I won't have long to wait to find out the answer!

Re: JK Map Scale - Leith Hill
I wish the map scale debate would change it's name as it isn't the map scale that causes the problem.
It is the size of the lines and symbols.
If the Leith Hill map is printed to the IOF specifications then it will have the thicker lines and larger symbols that make the usual 1:10,000 scale maps so much easier to read.
If it is printed with the normal 1:15,000 size symbols then the fact it is 1:10,000 scale is irrelevant. It will look like a 1:15,000 map and be pretty unreadable to the average sixty year old.
I guess we just have to wait and see.

Not long at all, since there are plenty of copies of the map in circulation. Take one for a run and see if/where you need a magnifier (for me,
its about 5% of the map).
I haven't run on the new map. It doesn't look too detailed, but the green stripe screen doesn't help legibility. My memory from the
last JK was that they played hide-and-seek with the flags, and the features were small, such that blasting into the area and looking for
people was the best strategy.
The (very) old map at 1:15000 is still perfectly legible throughout even to me, but hasn't mapped as much detail. In (ahem) 1985 we had some excellent
long legs which would be a pain to decipher at 1:7500.
