Thanks to all at LOK for a nice, if horrendously wet, event today at Holmbury. Nice to be able to run straight without getting your legs ripped to shreds by brambles! The waterproof maps got their first proper test and passed with almost flying colours. The only problem being when you are trying to refold it at it is all stuck together.
Now for the gripe: If the person who was leaving the event in a red car at about 12-05 is reading this then please SLOW DOWN and drive more carefully when driving along narrow forest tracks being used as an event car park. The track was not wide enough for both cars and people to fit down at the same time. It was certainly not wide enough to be going at the speed you were. A member of the public walking their dog was very lucky not to be hit by you as you missed them by less than an inch as you went at speed for the non-existent gap between the walker and the row of cars. Their dog was not so lucky and bounced off the front bumper, and probably was only a hairs breadth away from going under the wheels. (Fortunately I don't think it was hurt on this occasion.) Another inch or two to the left at the speed you were going and someone would have been seriously hurt. An incident like that with a member of the public could also easily jepardise access permissions for a really nice area.
Grip over, and I'll finish on a positive: A big thankyou to the two people who helped push my car out of the mud after it got stuck!

that could well have been me, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was more than one car stuck in the mud yesterday...
despite the cold, wet, miserable weather, it was a really enjoyable area to run round, straight was definitely great, shame i'm not one for paying my compass much attention.

Yesterday was great wasn't it. It was a real pleasure to largely avoid track runs. It was just frustrating that after no.17 my brain decided to give up concentrating on the navigation!
I'm very glad we had 1:10000. The thickets would have been more of a nightmare at 1:15!
That was my first wet-use of those pretex maps. I had absolutely no problems with it. Yes, it soaked through, and folding and unfolding became a little more difficult, but otherwise I was very impressed.
