I can also say that he got the material around the toe replaced (although the first time he got it done, the shoe-maker went overboard and made him a real leather front section.... not that great when they are wet!). This also extended the life of the shoes by at least a couple of years. Even if it costs a bit to get the work done, it still worked out cheaper than a new pair of shoes every year.
