yep, I think it's a bit jobby, a storm of jobby you could say.
But seriously, it is a bit rubbish, the courses must have been a lot shorter than previous years, I don't see why they didn't take them as reference. Also, these are the best juniors in britain, the winners are always going to run fast and pretty clean on most areas so 2.4km is obviously too short.

M14s had 2.4km on Individual then 3.5km on Relay. usually a relay course will be a couple of km shorter than classic race, so clearly it was far too short, the 16s/18s courses weren't too bad though, got to see the whole area, and a few legs with some big route choices.

Well, as someone who was actually at the competition, I will say it was a great weekend, resulting from a lot of work by FVO. The planning on both days gave good racing and there were no problems. The planner held up his hand to the short M/W14 courses but the best people were still on top.

Maybe / maybe not. There was a significant difference in the results between individual and relay (see below). It would have been interesting to see how the times and order on day 1 would have changed had the area been engulfed in mist/fog.

Two different types of orienteering were tested on the two days - no bad thing perhaps. My son at least thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend and was still buzzing when he eventually arrived home around 9:30. Thanks to everyone involved in putting on the event.

Enjoyment is EVERYTHING. Winning enhances enjoyment. If you don't enjoy it you'll never keep doing it, particularly if your perfomane goes into a lull.

This is the World's greatest sport we are talking about. Every event is different far beyond any other sport I am aare of.

Enjoy it all, enjoy the variety, enjoy winning, enjoy making crass mistakes, and when its not so fun just imagine what it miht have been like running round another tartan track and doing badly.

Not a huge difference I would expect - the M/W14 courses were that straightforward that a bit of mist/fog wouldn't make much difference to this lot (I would hope!), all of whom are used to much harder orienteering. Whilst the courses should be light green standard, it was very much at the easy end of that.

That's great to hear - and at this stage easily the most important thing.

That's a bold call - a different course could well have generated different results, especially amongst these M14s who fluctuate dramatically, being on top one week, down the next. All you can say is that for that course on that day, those guys were the best. After all, as NeilC points out, just look at the relay day!

Having said that , I don't want to take anything away from the leaders - a great run by Duncan to win by such a margin given how short the race was. Very impressive!

Indeed, most definitely just jesting.

But don't dismiss results or planning on the basis that, provided everyone enjoyed the course, it must be OK. Neil's point was that the course length and difficultly can fundamentally influence results, and for some kids at top level, that in itself might detract from the enjoyment.

Interestingly the last place on each day was about 3x the time of the winner, even at JHI you have to allow for less experienced.

It's the JHI though... you're planning courses for the BEST juniors in the country...not allowing for poorer ones.

As has been said above the planner has held his hands up and said, yes, i made a mistake, the 14's courses were too short. Time to let it rest I think.

I pinched Tullsters wee brothers M18 map and ran round it afterwards, thought it was a very good course with lots of tricky controls and interesting legs route choices. Looking at the other courses from 16 up on route gadget they look similarly well planned.

and yes, i managed to beat rhodri's time, but only just, good running from the young talent!
