In order to take my mind off the agonising wait for my results on Thursday I thought I would try and create a Thierry style orienteering video of about 3 or 4 minutes. I have the running bit sorted and an area with map (its only Lyme Park, nothing fancy) but the editing of the video will be a bit harder. Windows Movie Maker is fine for simple things, but I'd like to put in the route on the map as I run, and animate it if at all possible.
Basically what I am asking is if anyone could recommend a video editing program (preferably free) and give me advice on animating a red line on a map. Thanks.

I am sure there must be 'semi professional' (or even fully professional) video makers out there but in the meantime here is what I would do...
I use Roxio Videowave - not free though. Video the map in clips adding a bit more of the route on each time then 'slice' it into the running footage. Editing is the time consuming bit of film making so it should keep you busy until Thursday (good luck by the way!)

Adobe premier elements is the bees knees, well Proffesional is and elements is about 1/10th of the price and seems to do most stuff. Its about £60
Animating a line around is a pain the the neck, and quite difficult to do, without very very expensive software (adobe after effects)

The last one I did for a factory schematic, I ended up doing in Flash, wallance and grommit style frame by frame.
Probably best for O to use something like route gadget and then record the screen output

Ta for the advice...I think £60 might be a bit steep for one (rather small) project. I have since found a friend of the family who edits film professionally so I might get him to help me...or just use Windows Movie Maker. Either way filming starts tomorrow

not sure if this will help, but this site has animations for route choice and you might be able to download something. Didnt really read anymore about it, cos its 12.30am and i should be in bed. But worth a look maybe
