Did anyone else see the article yesterday in the Ecosse section of the Sunday Times, with comments from Donald, and the journalist attending a FVO 'WEE' event?
Quite good exposure, but again the pictures (taking up over half of the page) did not really give the impression of a competitive sport. The largest was of people copying down their courses from mastermaps, and the second was of the journalist leaning back against a tree looking puzzled at her map! It would have been good if the journalist had attended a SOL or similar!

At the bottom of the article it says:

Did you know they have removed the word 'Gullible' from the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

There is also quite a positive article in the form of an interview with Helen Winskill in the August edition of Runners World magazine. They still can't resist a silly throw away comment about orienteers being "the train spotters and campanologists of the athletic world, taking to the woods with cagoules and flasks of weak lemon drink"!! Helen gets one in about "running being a bit dull, too much time to concentrate on how much you hurt", which is spot on for me despite the fact that I do also road run for my sins. Nice photo, lots of positive comments including training tips, more of the same please.

It's a shame orienteering gets articles like this that take the mickey when in the same Sunday Times there's a full page article about Adventure Racing and the Rat Race and there's at least 4 orienteers in the picture.
How we have sold orienteering to the papers initially has left a difficult legacy to overthrow.
But having said that - are those who are involved in interviews and photos too meek and unpretentious to really sell what is an excellent sport??
Be proud and do the big sell on this excellent adventure sport - we kick butt in other disciplines -let the press know! EG Rat Race - In the top teams there's always at least one orienteer.
Lard
