Actually Hoco - I really like the idea of an "O"Lympics. Probably have to be a triathalon. Two events on the Saturday night and third with prize giving on the Sunday.

So if we have a 3 legged orienteering sprint race as one of the events what about the other two? I don't think we need to keep the duck theme - but we do need an O theme. The grounds are mapped - completely flat, there are as I recall and area of hard standing with some netball hoops.

so any ideas for the other 2 events?

The puzzle-o thing that you had there in 2003 (I think) was quite good. Where in order to get the right order of controls you had to get the question at each one right. I rather enjoyed it last time...

Saturday 5.30-6pm 3 legged score (mass start).

6 - 6.30pm The Run-In Comp (what you've always wanted - forget the rest of the course - this will consist of the last control and the finish - 100 yards-ish - with a few terrain type obstacles in the way - now we'll really see whose the daddy!

Sunday 5.30 - 6.30pm the sprint O (possibly chasing sprint - see how we trial the format at th MADO social on July 1st) followed by the Grand Prize Giving with special podium constructd by impoverish Malvern craftsmen (i. e. Mr H.) with prizs blagged by me.

both days finish in time for you to eat your tea and get to the quiz/ceilidh

What a brilliant thread! Love all these ideas, duck throwing, axe racing (only joking), definitely a ceilidh; but the band can make or break a ceilidh. We had one at our wedding, they were meant to play for an hour, have a break for people to eat then another hour playing later. They played non-stop for over 4 hours and people nearly died! It was brilliant fun, and despite the state people ended up in everyone said it was the best ceilidh ever. It might affect your run the next day though.

To be honest I think most things can be great fun, but the crucial factor is the approach of the people putting on the activity. If they are enthusiastic, and more than a little bit barmy, it is infectious. But the reverse applies when the organisers look a bit bored or dragged into it because it is just another chore. Can't imagine you being like that though Mrs. H!

For the hot summer events.......

How about hiring some stocks and throwing wet sponges/other appropriate objects at some volunteer/biggest whinger on nopesport etc.

South east orienteers .... there are some stocks at Downe for our next event there.

This thread's amusing, but just to make a slightly serious point. All these extra things would be great and would encourage orienteers to hang around after the event and socialise, but would they discourage people from volunteering for organising events if they thought that the expectation was to organise this kind of thing as well? Maybe it would be better if organised by a neighbouring club not connected with the organisation of the main O event?

It's a fair point Sean - but this isn't an average sunday morning badge event - it is a 3-day holiday event and if we want people to spend their holiday and come and stay on our camp site then we need to offer them a worthwhile holiday experience - otherwise they might all clear off to Centre Parcs or Disney land (shudder).

It hasn't put me off volunteering to do it - in fact to be perfectly honest I wouldn't be interested in doing it at all if I couldn't provide EVO - even organising it is fun I usually delegate the stuff anyway - or even franchise it out (juniors - either club or region - can always use some money. I say "I'll provide the props and the prizes you run it and charge a £ per punter and keep the proceeds" everone's a winner!


For an "ordinary" event, i've tried to introduce the concept of a "Public Shelter Tent" where people can congregate and eat their sandwiches/swap course thoughts - all that requires is a tent - anything extra (junior squad cake stall or the like - bring and share picnic - we do a lot of those at MADO C5s) is up to the club putting the event on - it doesn't need to be a lot of extra work.

I'm not saying other people have to do all this - but I'm not going to stop to make them feel better about not doing it
