The same thing happened once when I was walking to an event in Dean. For the first 20 years of orienteering, I did not have a car, and often walked or cycled from public transport /Hitching.
This was the cause of a 3 mile extra walk and I could have got there on another bus (no I am not coming out

At Duns on Sunday, there were signs on walkers route explaining what was going on, and an invitation to join in. Good stuff!
A good idea would be to do what I have seen done in France, posters in shop windows etc before the event in the local towns/villages.
