For Senior classes, only the results of those entering the competition as BOF members will be counted in determining the qualifying time. There is no such restriction for Junior classes and if a current Gold standard competitor enters a B class, their time should not be used in calculating the qualifying time. A Badge standard remains current for two calendar years including the year in which it was achieved.

We are about to have a Badge event.... so I'm looking at ensuring that the results spits out the correct badge times... this all happens on the day.

It seems the rules have slightly changed since I last had a go at this.

(1) There is a rule about whether people are BOF members or not.

Do I really have to cater for this??? Does this imply that only people who have declared their BOF number on the entry form be included in the calculations???

(2) It appears that there aren't any A or B classes anymore.

I think this means that I can safely ignore the rule about Gold Standards. So we also don't need to ask entrants about their current standard. That's fine.

(3) All these ageless Junior Classes have been created.
It seems that JM5[SML] and JW5[SL] have the same calculations as the senior L classes so that is easy.

(4) JM[1-4] classes.

Do these classes get badges? or are they scored as colour coded???

There are a few potential ambiguities. I believe you are correct that the J5 courses each have their own calculations.

Yes they do. No they are not. In that order!

I notice that along with the other changes instituted in January, the rule that boys classes slower than girls should adopt the girls'l times has been removed. Which, along with the other changes, means that a JM5S badge is often easier than JW5S (although BOF rules allow for running 'up' in boys classes. A long with quite a few other classes when boys entries are low. An interesting anomaly.

But how do you know who is a BOF member?

Does someone who enters without giving their BOF number (i.e. has forgotten it) count as being ex-BOF?
Seems like a unenforceable rule in practice.

The rule (App J 1.1.4) actually says:

"... only the results of those entering the competition as BOF members will be used ..."

Presumably that means that if they don't supply a BOF number they are not "entering as a BOF member" - so they don't count in determining the badge times. (Although interestingly they could still be eligible to receive the badge based on other peoples times...)

Is an overseas runner who competes 3 times & gains a badge award eligible? They don't have any requirement to join BOF if they are a member of another Federation.... could be the case with some Irish people?

Using the standard OE2003 software and the competitor archive from http://www.sportident.co.uk allows you to input just the SI number and the software prefills the name, club and BOF number for you.

When I was checking the results for our badge event this just left a handful of people who weren't BOF members and I checked them against the archive table to make sure - didn't take very long at all and it was often several members of a family.

As Awk says the JM5S badge times are a bit strange being slower than JW5S on the same course. The most recent guidelines have also removed the suggestion that were M65 and M70 (for example) are on the same course and the M70 times are quicker then the M65 badge times should be based on the M70 times. At our event the controller has used his discretion to make these common sense adjustments.

There is also a facility on the BOF ranking points system for looking up missing BOF numbers. The system uses Name, class and club and you can adjust the "fuzziness" with which it finds matches.

Anyway... I looked at a few past events and it looks like the rule doesn't really seem to have much effect... I did see a few classes being won by INTs... not sure if an INT can be a BOF member.

If my calculations work on the basis that everyone is a BOF member it will be probably hard for anyone to spot I got it wrong!

yeah i wouldn't let anyone from INT be a bof member either, how dare they win races.

Sorry. My mistake. I had interpreted that as INTernational. You are right it is INTerlopers.

I'm a long way away, down in the South East (near the TD5 area of Leith Hill)!

I think the final approach will be to count all competitors as BOF for the on-the-day preliminary results and then tidy the results up afterwards. I'm not sure if our next event is a ranking event or not but if it is I need to tidy up the people without BOF numbers as they won't get included otherwise when the results are submitted to the BOF ranking system.
