Terragen is nice but at over 30 minutes for a complex scene with trees, computers aren't really ready for real-time (i.e. interactive) rendering at that quality yet. On top of that it doesn't take advantage of graphics hardware at all.
For an idea of what current graphics technology can do, have a look at the Crytech engine (used in the Far Cry game)
Imagine an orienteering game that looked like this.

i think i was at that event. seem to remember there being a control (7 i think) on an island.
thank god i can walk on water. (get it?)
I like the idea of making it more realistic, but i can also understand why they aren't moving to hardware acceleration. considering the relatively small market share catching features is going to attract, i doubt they can encourage the bigger manufacturers to get on board.
at least they are trying.

A prettier orienteering game needen't be any more complicated to make maps for. Catching Features tends to do things the brute force way and doesn't really take advantage of any of the more advanced features of modern graphics hardware (Shaders for the nerds). There are lots of little things it could do to look much better without slowing down. I don't mean to detract from what the guy has done though. I tried making my own version but ran out of motivation very quickly.

Awesome!!!
You also have this stuff: Paper TV so you could have interactive maps, using GPS to show a competitors location at any moment. handed out at major events to reporters.
ahh, i love technology i do.
