I do race walk for England. I got into race walking from going to a "star track" (for those of you who don't know what that is, it is an athletics course sponsored by both uk athletics and Norwich Union and takes place in the school Summer holidays). They do one session of race walking during the week and give letters to anybody who has potential in the sport, encouraging them to go along. However, i'm not sure if they do this any more.
Also, i know at least 4 athletics clubs which teach their younger athletes race walking and then try and get them to continue the sport once they are old enough for competition. The only problem is, that the athletics clubs, generally, are far more active in getting people to do running and other more popular sports and so minority sports like race walking and orienteering don't get as much publicity as they should.
