i'm sure there are other threads which have the whole Emit vs SI debate etc which I can't be bothered finding but I was reminded of another reason why Emit splits results are so infuriating - where are the results for those who didn't finish?
I know individuals will have their splits from the finish but for those wanting to compare splits with people who mp'd or whatever it involves hunting them down to find out their times! why is it not possible to display the splits for those who haven't finished? This I imagine could be especially annoying for newcomers who might have mp'd and therefore don't appear at all on the splits results. This means they have no means to find out how they were getting on before the mispunch.
surely it can't be that hard to output the splits of those who havent completed the course surely?

Glad you brought this up Brooner, it's one of those really annoying things that should be fairly easy to fix. It's the standard EMIT results software and it's terrible output that's to blame. The main problem seems to be it doesn't list control numbers, like you would see at the top of an SI event's results. This means that extra controls punched lie within the results and not separate at the end, like with SI, and if someone has missed a control/punched the wrong one then the software doesn't output them on the splits list. Which means that the results are incompatible with Winsplits and splitsbrowser unless someone is willing to go through to format them all...
I say standard results as they can produce SI-like results, as demonstrated by the November Classic results from 2003:
http://www.emituk.com/results/20031102/index.htm
which do include control numbers, and splits for those DQd. So why can't they use this all of the time??
and yes - you're right guest, there is no exact record of why each team was disqualified in the relays. they can do this for individual, so why not relays?? It's just a minor software modification after all...

It's a difficult one to get right, although I would concur that the Emit ones aren't the best. Even the IOF standard doesn't specify what should be produced in the case of mispunch, extra punch, missing punch etc.
The project I'm working on at the moment (aside from finishing the house) will output (in XML) any control that should have been punched with a null time and any that were punched with a null control number. It's then up to the display software to select how to display splits - e.g. when comparing with other runners you only want to see controls on the course, but when viewing just your own you want to see why you mp'd. I'm planning to make it Emit compatible if somebody wants to lend me some Emit gear to get it working?
