Anyone do this ?
My experience of Course 8, 5.0k, 150m (M65, W16, W45, W50)
Pre-event blurb made it quite clear that both the dark green and open felled areas were impenetrable.
So . . . this left 93% of the running routes to be on good tracks/paths, and the odd good ride.
It gets better: The last 1K (yes 1K !) was uphill on a tarmac road.
Is Orienteering.ie on a mission to get more old parkrunners into orienteering ?
Not impressed.
An answer: - Swap the 'middle' and 'classic' areas around, as the middle distance area had more useable terrain for a longer event. Or have a map exchange at the 'classic' and send competitors back through the same few decent bits of forest.
If the huge amount of 'track work' that I presume many courses had, were flagged up in advance, I think I'd feel a bit more sympathetic, particularly if other mitigating circumstances were made apparent. However, to go in 'cold' doesn't sit well with me.

I'm quite often at the Irish Champs but decided this year's terrain didn't look up to much so didn't bother. Looking at routegadget I think I made a good decision.
Next year however should be worth the trip.

Re: Irish Champs - 'Classic' (day 3)
The area / courses actually look "less bad" than I expected, but the decision to put the finish where it is and have the last 1-2k as a track run does seem slightly curious. 15-16 on course 2 being a particular favourite.
I'm assuming the planner thought "better to have them run back to assembly than walk" but I'm not sure I'd agree.
