Looking at the leg I saw two crossing points and thought the higher one would be more optimal and save climb. But looked again and... my red line is not straight to the next control but to the lower crossing point. And no similar line to the upper one. And there are tapes in front of me, presumably helping me down to that lower crossing point. So no choice but to use the lower one.
I don't remember looking at my descriptions to see if I needed to use the crossing points or not as I thought the map was clear. I might well have done so if I thought it was ambiguous.
So, it was clear cut common sense as per the rules, fine, for me. I guess I needed to be running harder! Can't comment on the lines of the other 20+ courses.
But I can understand that in a race situation if you don't give yourself time to look at the map carefully enough...
It could have been made more 'idiot-proof' by the suggestions above.
Hindsight is always a wise thing.
