First point - Emit provides feedback - the light flashes.
Second point - if Bostrom wants to develop a technique that gets him disqualified regularly, thats his choice (like I mentioned in a previous post - there are ways of guaranteeing an Emit card registers and touching quickly on to the forest unit isn't one of the more reliable ones).
Third point - a couple of small bits of tape can hold on the Emit back-up card very nicely - I've never lost one despite plenty of runs in wet conditions.
Fourth point the Scottish Champs in 2012 had 730+ runners, so is our biggest ever event - and it used ..............wait for it.................Emit

and yes, with 63 dqs the 2012 Scottish Champs was your most successful emit event yet. Not to mention the record-breaking 20% dq rate in the M21E sprint

I agree with learning the correct technique to punch the EMIT control properly but until there is one standardised way of wearing/using the EMIT brick someone is always likely to be approaching the control box from the wrong direction. At both the events I took part in that used EMIT last year, for one I had several controls needing me to run round the control to place the brick correctly (or trying to dislocate my wrist was the alternative) and second I was first starter at one race and felt sure I placed the brick correctly but might not have left it long enough (and then didn't look at the display to check the control was recorded! ) First mispunch in over 25 years of orienteering!

As I understand it, that shouldn't make a difference - old-fashioned EMIT controls don't need to be woken up in the same way that SI units do (not sure about the new-fangled touch-free system).

Correct - Standard Emit units are always on - so no first-start penalty! One of the joys of the system - buy the unit, use it for 10 years then replace, no batteries, no programming of codes, no waking up..........

The one thing I am never sure about with Emit events is whether there is an truly accurate system of timing. With traditional Emit, every competitor is carrying their own clock, and there may be very small differences between them. My understanding is that with a timed start your finish time, and thus race time, is determined by deducting the difference between your recorded download time and recorded finish time (based on the clock in your card) from the actual download time in the download computer. It is possible that this deducted time is not 100% accurate, so IOF recommend that for important events the distance/time between finish and download is minimised - certainly less than 30 minutes.

Does anyone know if EmiTag works the same way? I guess it would be possible that the action of passing through the finish loop triggers a record, either on your Tag or directly to the download computer, from a separate independent clock?
