Water at O races
I see the Compasssport editorial has put a strong case for provision of water both during and at the end of orienteering races. Have we stumbled across the "musical differences" that led to the parting of the ways with former CompassSport columnist, and water denier, Mrs H?

Compasssport hasn't made it this far north yet but it doesn't change my own views as a fellow water denier.
Fac et Spera. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the Scottish 6 Days Assistant Coordinator

When i go to events I do not expect water, likewise when I go out anywhere else with my family I take sufficient to keep us all going for the time we are out. Water is different in many parts - taking your own ensures that it is fresh, and you can add squash etc to it! If water is available though its a bonus!

I'm happy not to be given any water at the finish. You can bring your own, and if you forgot usually there's a trader you can buy some from. Or drive off and buy on the way.
But during a longish race, on a hot day, water should be provided. You can't reasonably expect everyone to have a camelbak. I completely agree with Nick that the situation at the Scottish last year (on the hot days) was bordering on negligence, and there didn't seem any good reason for it apart from principle - areas like Roseisle and Carse had massive roads through them where you could have easily driven up a load of water.
In the rules for the British Champs at least it says you have to provide water every 30 minutes of running time, so twice on the very long courses and once on most others.

A long race on a cool day still requires several drinks points.
