If you have already downloaded you can't; however, if you realize before then i.e. at or after the finish but before downloading then you can:

Competitors are not permitted to return to their course after completion. Competitors must not re-enter the competition area after their race unless the Organiser permits them to do so.

In venice some years ago I missed the last control 50m from finish ( obscured by crowds , brain dead as well ), realised as I punched the finish but was refused permission to return Since then I have assumed at least using electronic punches that the finish punch terminated your run. How does it work technically if you go back out and punch another control and then finish again, is it just the same as punching a wrong control ( the time just adds on and you have two finish times?

Useful info in case I do it again, certainly some one at Keele went back to punch a missed control after finishing ...the finish team were not sure of the rules but allowed it, don't know what happened at download. Seems its Ok if MM is right in his interpretation of the rule.

SI cards have a single space for a finish punch and many normal punches.

In your scenario:

Punch Finish (takes up Finish slot on card)
Punch a control (which will go in the next normal punch spot)
Punch the finish again (overwrites your initial finish punch)
Download will show course complete and correct time (assuming you have all the other controls)

I actually thought punching the finish was the action that 'completed' your run, but madmike's excellent rules knowledge has proved me wrong. His quoted rule 9.16 makes sense though, basically saying: you must realise on your own without the aid of a computer...

thanks for the clarification...of course most of the time you do not realise until you get to download. However twice i have missed the last control ( due to the excitement of seeing the finish) realised it but accepted the DQ , now apparently I have an option, If i can persuade the finish officials to let me go back out . (could probably sneak out the back of the tent if needed )
