I was organising a running race at work last week and one guy said "do I have to pin on my number ... I don't like pins ... no I *really* don't like pins".
I used a pen to put a hole in his number and used one of his friendship bracelets to attach it his wrist (Larks Foot / Cow Hitch for any Knotty-geeks out there)
I dislike pins for TrailO numbers as having holes in vests t-shirts isn't so bad, but I don't want them in my cagoules - so I use the triathlon idea of attaching it to an elastic cord and put that round my waist - I can then take on or off a cagoule and still be "legal".
I usually use pins, but have been known to use a hole punch to make holes in the number and thread the cord through.
