I recall a JK training event many years ago held in some caves in the SW (Somerset?), but has there been other subterranean orienteering events?
Part of this years Holland-OL 4 day event, held two weeks ago, featured controls in old wartime bunkers on two days. Day 2 stages 2 and 3, at Willemstad, and nearby Fortress Sabina (which was a 'Super-sprint') had the underground sections on enlarged maps in 'red' - you just had to locate the entrances!
Headcam video here: http://youtu.be/YPgn67O9nVA
shows the enlarged Willemstad map, and the final section in amongst the bunkers.

There has been at least one event at Chislehurst Caves around 20 years ago, before the days of sprint maps. The longer courses were around 3k. I enjoyed it so much that I was still grinning 30 minutes after finishing despite at least 5 mins of errors!

There was an event at Monkton Farleigh mine east of Bath in the late 1980's, when I was at University there. I think it was organised by KSODA - The Kingwood School, Bath club - that does not appear to exist anymore.
It was a limestone mine that was turned into a munitions store in WWII so the floor was smooth concrete and slightly sloping at a constant gradient.
I think it was a score event - great fun as long as you spotted the knee high elevated railway tracks. Given the floor surface it was possible to blast around if you didn't get lost. Never got the results but would like to see them.
I'll try and find the map tonight but in the meantime to give you a flavour - http://www.monkton-farleigh.co.uk/sc_mo ... leigh2.htm

A Chislehurst Cave event would go nicely with the London City Race ?

The Monkton Farleigh event was training for JK89 - it used a 2-sided map and I remember you had to carry/wear two torches - I put one of them down to punch a control, ran off and then had to navigate back to retrieve it. It was great fun!
