Ian - nice clear map, so many thanks for that. But I'm curious about why you decided to use a "special symbol" for flowerbeds, the green/black symbol (ISSOM 421) rather than the yellow/green symbol (ISSOM 528.1).

The latter is described as "area with forbidden access" and one of the quoted examples is "a flower bed", so shouldn't this have been used instead?

Sorry folk, we've been having few "technical problems" with the output from the Emitag
system as the club personnel responsible for getting everything on the website are all
much more familiar with SI (software/output). I will try to ensure it is up in some way
later this evening (Wednesday 8th May). It may be missing 1 or 2 runners where there
was a problem when either they stayed too close to the finish for a long time or there
was a corruption in the splits(but not in the total times).

The planner went out to look at the problem you reported during the race.
The "bank covered in wildflowers is 20 metres (approx) before the uncrossable wall
and it is marked with a formline below the contour. The wildflowers were there because
the Council decided not to mow the bank in the same way as the surrounding grass.
The bank with the wildflowers was not, as such, uncrossable/impassable just rougher.
There was no "evidence" that anyone crossed any "impassable" features in THAT area
(NNW of 101,ESE of 151)

Possibly because I hadn't read the Spec carefully enough.

I think of 528.1 (olive green) has being "settlement - forbidden to enter/cross" whereas I think of 421 (green-blank) has "vegetation - forbidden to enter/cross". So it seemed logical to use olive-green for private houses and associated gardens, but green-black for patches of vegetation within accessible areas, such as flower beds set into otherwise in-bounds lawns.

However you have prompted me to re-read the specs, which say

421 Impassable vegetation (forbidden to cross)
An area of dense vegetation (trees or undergrowth) which is impassable or which shall not be crossed, due to forbidden access or because it may constitute a danger to the competitor.

528.1 Area with forbidden access (forbidden to cross)
An area with forbidden access such as a private area, a flower bed, a railway area etc.

So it seems that I should have used olive-green for the flower beds, reserving green-black for hedges and other dense shrubbery with forbidden access (and the normal 410 dark green "fight" for wild rhodie jungle)?

That's all very well but in the real world the distinction between a flower bed and a shrubbery is far from clearcut (and changes every time the council do some maintenance).

ISSOM desperately needs some revision to clarify the depiction of the various types of "impassable / forbidden to cross"

I use 528.1 for private land (private space for everyone) and 421 for municipal shrubbery (public space but forbidden to orienteers), and would only consider olive green for the the most formal and permanent flowerbeds

Like most powerpoint, it's not self contained without the speaker, but I'm too lazy to edit it.
Slide 10 onward are relevant here.

As a mapper, I try to avoid using OOB wherever possible. A very good mapper once told me "it is not the mappers job to know what will be OOB". So, for anything easily crossable, I avoid using an uncrossable symbol. If the organiser or planner of a specific event decide to make things "legally uncrossable" I'll change the map later.

What I like about this is that it forces the organiser/planner to think about each OOB section: why it's OOB, and what they can do to keep people out.

In changing the map to be OOB, anything originally yellow, brown or light green goes to olive green, dark green goes to green/black.
