neither have I and I've never beed DQd in 10 years for failing to register a control. Have had a dead brikke once but swapped it at the start when the start unit didn't flash.

I was part of the trouble-shooting team at the JK, dealing with card number changes and backup card assessments. There were a relatively high number of competitors disqualified for mispunching I guess due to the closeness of controls. I am only aware of one that was reinstated from backup card evidence. In this case the backup card did show a pin mark for the missing control. The pin position was also shared by another control on the same course so it was not possible to definitively say that the competitor had or had not visited the control.

I am not aware of any reinstatements made without backup card evidence.

There were a few cases of complete failure of EMIT cards due in the main to the age of the cards. The status and run-time for these competitors was defined by the organisers on the basis of other evidence - mainly the CCTVs at the finish.

Apart from these failures the EMIT system accurately recorded times and control codes.

Competitors were only changed from timed start to punching start if they could convince the organiser of a valid reason for missing their timed start.

Glad to hear this. Hundreds (or should that be thousands) of us made the effort to get up on time (after adjusting our clocks) to get to our starts on time, shiver whilst waiting and then contort ourselves to get our pin punches. The rules were quite clear about timed starts and backup cards.

How do you know? Each Emit card carries its own clock, so there is no guarantee that every clock keeps correct time ...

OK, I'm no expert but I guess you could have more faith in EMIT timekeeping than SI. For EMIT, the times on the card are relative not clock time. The clock times stated on the splits are worked out (backwards) from the download time from the computer not the card. The time taken and splits are as accurate as the drift rate on the internal clock probably measured as a few milliseconds a day.

I don't know what version EMIT brikkes most people were using at the JK but as someone that owns one with a screen, I had problems when i reverted back to an older brikke because I use the screen to check if the punch was registered correctly. In my opinion you can save 1-2 seconds per control using a brikke with a screen because it is possible to miss the flash from the unit, with the screen it will show the scrolling bars for around 2 seconds after you punch. For a sprint race this could add up pretty quickly...
