One of tonight's Masterminds couldn't identify the sport given "maps" and "compasses"

I think "running" and "sport" came into it at least. "Off road running with a navigational challenge" is how we described Moray 2013 in the 50 words or so we were allowed in advertising the event on the Event Scotland website. Can't remember the exact words they used, but running certainly came into it and I think they named the person who is supposed to have invented it.

Yes, that's what the programme said, but according to the IOF:

The first foot and ski orienteering competitions are known to have been held as early as the 1890s.

I have heard it said (although as a joke) that O should mean SkiO rather than FootO

BTW I normally describe Orienteering as "Racing" rather than "Running". This has some advantages IMO:
* Objective is to get to finish in the fastest time, there are no bonus points for running every step of the way
* Most competitors walk at some point on hillier courses, and many walk for a significant %age
* Covers Mountain-O (known to IOF as Marathon-O) better
* Covers BikeO and SkiO
