For all you budding Mountain Marathoners out there my local orienteering club are putting on a Mountain Marathon with a bit of a difference this November called the Grampian Mountain Challenge.
http://grampoc.com/2012/08/15/grampian-mountain-challenge-2012-glen-dye-17th18th-november/
Taking the standard MM format we are adding some orienteering at the beginning of Day 1, and the end of Day 2. We hope that the change from a 1:10000 scale map to a 1:40000 scale map mid race will give runners an added challenge and test their powers of navigation to the limit. Entries have started coming in but it would be great to see them fill up more. The area for the MM sections is wild open heathland rising up to over 750m, and the forested area for the orienteering sections is in Glen Dye, one of the finest places to run in the North East of Scotland.
We will also be transporting tents and overnight gear to the remote mid-race camp so you only need to carry a day pack with food and waterproofs etc, just the essentials. There's a marquee with hot food too and hopefully a band to entertain you for some of the evening.
If you're looking for a pre-winter target, or just looking to extend the race season a little longer then don't pack up your MM kit after the OMM this Halloween, keep it packed and take on the Grampian Mountain Challenge!!
RUN GMC... It's Tricky!

Re: Grampian Mountain Challenge 2012
Spent a large part of the day hanging controls - its going to be fun - mostly good running with very few areas of deep heather (in the parts I visited anyway). Lots of route choice and great views (before the cloud came down).
Campsite in quite a scenic spot too.
Enter and you'll enjoy the race!

The clouds drifted away as the event started - to glorious blue skies and cold air. Looking out to Mount Battock now there are a few small puffy clouds around, but nothing threatening - looks like the event has lucked out with the weather today.

Picked up Sarah this morning - another bright crisp day, sounds like it was a really fun, enjoyable event. Worthy of more runners.... maybe in 2 years I'll have a go (but I won't try to hang onto Murray when he comes past
)
