The BOF website shows the embargoed area as extending from a point 2 miles SE of Guildford which according to the AA is 28.2 miles from Reading so I'll give you 30 miles and their route doesn't touch the M25. I suppose you could make it 50-60 if you went via the M25...... but I think that is cheating.

Technically correct, but the assembly/car parking is in Peaslake so if you want to
drive along all the dinky Surrey and Berkshire by-roads then you could probably do it
in 38 miles (=/-). And unless you are going to run M21E you are not likely to get
to the far western parts of the area (but that depends on your navigational ability ).

The JK is a South Central presentation whilst the BOC/BRC is a South-East affair.

And FWIW I agree that it is not the best scheduling of 2 of the biggest events in
the British O calendar. (I will not go into the potential "clash" with foreign calendars --
but the events have to be held sometime !!)

We're hardly happy about this down in the south-east. Putting on BOC 5 weeks after a JK that's only an hour's drive away, and clashing with TioMila. But we're treating it as a done deal that we are lumbered with and getting on with producing the best show we can.

Mrs H is hardly quick off the mark here. BOC/JK both up north one year and both down south the next was raised at National Fixtures level a good 2 years ago. It was thought then that it was too late to do anything about it. I believe at the time National Fixtures got their wrists slapped and suggested they try joined-up thinking

Please cheer up everyone. For the JK you could stay somewhere like Oxford and make it a town + orienteering weekend. For the British Champs, surrey hills isn't far off the south coast you could make it a beach + orienteering weekend and therefore both weekends could be very different. Once you're in the forest and running well they're all different areas aren't they... it's the character of the area that matters if you're after variety in your orienteering, not how many miles from area X.

Seems like normal service is resumed for 2014 and 2015

If only life was simple!

If you factor in that SOA are hosting the brilliant 6 day every other year, North West and Wales do a multiday every 4 years, the previous history of who did BOC and JK, then scheduling fixtures becomes rather complicated. Add to this EMOA and EAOA won't or can't do BOC/JK, and a BOF Board mandate that BOC should be the fixed May date, options become limited. And, that the Easter date is diiferent each year. And that Events Committee/BOF Board were mooting that JK and BOC locations would decided centrally and the current arrangements would cease. And limitation on terrain access. And exam periods.

Despite the best efforts of Fixtures Group no Assocation was prepared to change their position in the rota, hence the current position. The proposed calendar was referred back to Associations many times - See Fixtures Group minutes 2009 for more detail on efforts to resolve this. I note this was discussed at the March 2012 Fixtures Group and referred back to Associations, item 10, so folks get involved in this issue at Association level, if you don't want this situation to repeat itself.

No it isn't just you! Personally, I think the programme for 2013 looks really attractive. It's not just the JK and British (both in beautiful parts of the country, and for me the Chilterns and North Downs are quite different), there's loads of other variety: what looks like to be one of the better Scottish Six Days, a yummy looking Welsh Champs, a Lakeland weekend at Graythwaite, the British Nights at Tankersley, a Midlands in Sherwood (at its best time of year), and a whole string of smaller events I'm looking forward to more locally. Looking forward to it!

I'll probably skip both JK and BOC (neither inspire me) - save me and my family in excess of £600 in entries, travel and accommodation - should be enough to take them away for a week of holidaying and orienteering in the Baltics (we loved our cabin by a lake for the Takas 4 days last year).
