Night-O and Ranking Points

Correct, but again that isn't the point of this argument..................... It is the supposed unusual distribution of results at night events that has led to their exclusion, not the small number of competitors.

It would not be beyond the wit of man (although I would query that it may be beyond the wit of BO) to perform, as suggested above, a test run of the Sco.NC and BNC results against the Ranking system to "prove", or otherwise, that there are unusual distributions. General publication of the outcome and subsequent analysis would provide hours of debate both here and on the relevant BO committee (and/or
sub-group(s)).

I dont think you need to do that to debunk this argument.
I beat someone ranked 750 places above me on the St Andrews urban race. I dont think I ever did that on Night O!
If you are going to give ranking points on Urban races - which I clearly hope they continue to do, then night events should also get them.

If the argument about unusually large point allocations is correct then it would penalise anyone who didn't attend the night events.

Not if they were incompetent at night and couldn't capitalize on otherwise well-deserved points.

Another advantage of including Night events is that (at least around here) they have relatively few courses, thus you are racing (and being ranked) against people you wouldn't normally be on the same course as in the daytime. This combining/mixing up should improve the overall accuracy of the list.

Of course night events will produce anomalous ranking points. Darkness increases the technical difficulty (however bright your torch) and a lot of people can't cope.

Orienteering is supposed to be a running sport. Allowing ranking points from night events would penalise good runners who can't navigate, an outrageous idea!

(Day) events in genuine TD5 terrain should be excluded from the rankings by the same logic.

Ian - I like your last point, maybe I should propose this instead of asking for night events to be included - would reduce the cost of the ranking list. But then we'd have a million comments about whether terrain is TD5 or not........
