There have been several mentions of this problem recently, so I asked Jarkko (the developer of RouteGadget) for any advice to find the problem.
The problem is connected with the use of too large an image as the background map, and then Java (the application language that RouteGadget runs under) can sometimes run out of the memory required to process the image. This is why it only happens sometimes.
So I have written a tutorial about how to increase the memory available to Java, you can find it on the RouteGadget UK website.
I am not an expert in Java, so I looked at a few other sites explaining how to do it and then took some screenshots from my own computers. So I can't offer any support above this due to my ignorance.
