Since the other thread has gone off into uncrossability again, here's a new one...

I wasn't familiar with the document NeilC quotes above, which has come from the IOF Rules Commission, but it certainly makes for interesting reading. How many of the hypothetical examples at the end do you agree with?

And a tweak on #12, based loosely on a real event ....

In a Long final, competitors complain that the 50m run in can't have taken them two minutes, and certainly couldn't be done in minus 2mins as some splits suggest.
You verify that the finish control has malfunctioned and given times inaccurate by a few minutes, other controls are fine.

I suggest (especially if it is near to the finish) terminate the race at the last control still functioning correctly?
Mitigation would have been manual timing of all finishers I suppose.

Had something similar at the sprint within the October Oddyssey at Northallerton. One of two last controls (either side of a chair 25 m from the finish at most) had drifted so even the fat guy (me) registered a negative split on one race. Not an issue because it wasn't the key timing.

If it is an IOF event then electronic punching equipment cannot be used for timing, only for verification that the controls have been visited and in the correct order. A separate system must be used to give the overall time.

Also had a similar situation at a level C event where there were two finish SI units. One had not been correctly synchronised with race time and was about 5 minutes and some odd seconds out, I can't recall whether fast or slow. This was spotted early in the race, although the download was about 20 minutes walk from the finish, and the offending unit was removed for most of the finishers. It was then a matter of establishing exactly how many minutes and seconds to amend the finish times for the few early runners who had used the bad box.

I have never come across a variable malfunction during a race, so I would have thought that it should always be possible to correct any bad times by determining the error and applying a corresponding correction.

Not sure what you mean by "IOF event" here. Certainly for WREs I've been involved with we only used SI. We did have light gates etc for PWT, but that's ceratinly not an IOF event

Think about it .... there will be video on the finish line & a back up timing system... so splits mean SFA.....

SportIdent timing can be used on the finish for IOF WRE events as the primary means of timing. Only for WOC, WCup and JWOC is it mandatory to have "an electronic finish timing system, allowing the competitor to finish by running across the finish line". Sprint format has additional requirements.

A secondary timing system can be video of the finish line.
