Just trying to work out if we can get away without hold luggage for the flight to JK.
Has anyone gone through airport security with VJ metal dobs in carry on hand luggage? Did you get your O shoes through or did the nice security personnel acquire them? Thanks.

I've taken metal dobs though in hand luggage and wasn't even questioned.

A few years ago (during the "Troubles") I flew from Newcastle to Belfast carrying a steel lined briefcase containing a laptop and had to open it twice (and boot the laptop) before I could board the plane in England.
On the return trip I was on the plane before I realised that no-one had even asked to look at my hand luggage - a certain element of fear until we landed safely.

Re: Metal Dobs and Airport Security
I had a 45 minute aircraft transfer at Nairobi last year ~ just time I thought to buy a bottle of water in their "airside" duty free shop. We had some unattentive stewards on the overnight flight from London ~ even water was not freely being offered.
Was told on reaching checkin " you cann't take that on board". But I complained "it's still sealed ~ I bought it in the shop just there". The second reply " you cann't take that on board Sir".
So I opened the litre bottle and drank it in front of the security staff. Once I had the suspicious liquid inside my body they allowed me to proceed through the scanner to wait for boarding in the departure area.
There are "jobs worths" everywhere ~ just following instructions.

No problems with dobbs but I do remember having my bag examined very carefully by x-ray staff when it contains a head torch and battery pack

I've had a similar experience on Eurostar at St Pancras - yes Eurostar is treated like an airline - dobb studs fine, but headtorches regarded with deep suspicion.

I once went to the Netherlands for an O-event and only realised when packing for the way back that it had the same rules as for aircraft. Fortunately the security staff in Brussels were less attentive and didn't spot my Swiss Army knife! I must have had a head torch as well, as there was a night event; I don't recall that causing any problem, though I wasn't allowed to take the coffee I'd just bought through security at the London end (I adopted Clive's solution).

Re: Metal Dobs and Airport Security
I'm surprised how rarely I have any problems at all with my head torch - at the worst they simply want to see what it is, and only once have I needed to plug in a battery in and turned it on (I fly with it a lot, as I tend to take it when I go skiing!) I've always expected it to cause more problems due to homemade electronics and homemade LiIon battery packs.
The only thing I've ever had a major problem with was a hot glue gun - I'm still wondering how exactly they expected me to hijack a plane with it given a lack of mains power sockets on aircraft (I wasn't even allowed one in my hold luggage on one flight
) Though I suppose an honorary mention goes to the security chap who wouldn't let me take zip ties in my hand luggage as they could be used to tie up the cabin crew.

On a trip last year, the airport security staff did spot the Swiss army knife being carried by one of the people I was with. They got out their tape measure, measured the length of the blade, and gave it back to him, and let him proceed through to the aircraft...
Well, it was Geneva Airport after all!!

Actually, my army prisoner control training involved detailed instruction about use of cable ties. No longer in army, never needed to use techniques for real, but one day, perhaps...
