I'm thinking of getting a late entry (planning plans scuppered due to lack of map ) but have a rather tight timescale on Saturday. Does anyone know the story with this?

18/02/11 - Possibility of restricted EOD on Saturday
As we have an unexpectedly high pre-entry for the Middle Distance race on Saturday, it is possible that not all courses will be available for EOD.

If they know there are lots of people coming, presumably they'll print enough maps (aside: can MDOC still print onsite?). The only reason for a limit is if they don't have enough start times or there's some landowner number limit.

Saturday: Start times extended to 15.00, Course closing time 16.30.

So is there now plenty of EoD?

Having spent last week dealing with late entries for SNC (and I wasn't even organiser ), I'm trying to spare tham a phone call..

I'm pretty sure the issue is start slots rather than maps - they had to extend the start window to accommodate the number of blue pre-entries. There should be plenty of EOD slots for the black course.

EOD starts on Blue are the tightest and VERY limited, despite the extension of the start window. Make sure you get to the start on time use your allocated start time, it will help everyone and avoid you having a long wait for the next available free slot.

The problem for Saturday is on the blue and to a lesser extent the green and it is a lack of start slots. There shouldn't be a problem on Brown or Black unless we have a very large number of EODs

We will be printing on the day, certainly any A4 maps (and I think all Saturday's maps are A4). I'm not sure about on the day printing for Sunday, some of those maps may be A3 and I don't know if we will have the A3 printer there. If not, we should have a reasonable number of spares.

There shouldn't be a problem with start slots on Sunday although blue is again fairly crowded.

I hope that if the Level B requirement for an "approved" printer is ever enforced (and assuming that portable printers are not "approved"), it will only be applied to pre-entries and not used as a reason for blocking late entries.

In other words, if you enter late, you might have to accept a map which is not quite as well printed (as well as paying more for it).

Assuming that you're picking up your map after the start, the organisers would need to have some sort of method for the start team to identify late entries so they could give them one of the 'inferior quality' maps. I'd have thought it would have made the job of the start team quite complicated . I suppose that sealed maps could be given out at registration, but that might invite temptation, and also create extra hassle for the organising team.

Printing on the day for Level D events seems a great idea for clubs who have the facilities.

Sunlit Forres beat me to it. I concur exactly. My experience of many club printers is that the maps are massively harder to read the detail.

I think it brilliant that people can enter on teh day, but just adding maps at a very different standard of printing which competitors get at random is not a suitable answer.

In the past I have hand drawn maps for late starters who have had strict instructions to ensure they ask for the hand drawn map only to find that they have not done so - and this more than once

We were looking at some old maps of Bleathwaite and Torver (from the days when overprints were done using John Bull printing outfits) and it was noticable how much clearer the old maps were, particularly the wrinkly bits.

Pete - (at the risk of stirring something up) maybe the overprint was clearer too? Provided the overprinter knew what he was doing, and was prepared to make the effort, I still think the old ways could look at least as good as OCAD overprinting. At least the fine detail didn't get obliterated.

It was indeed very clear - but about a mm south of where it was supposed to be.
