I've just noticed that a couple of events to be held at category B do not have the map registered on the BO database. Should I be worried that
a) the area, though attracting a premium entry fee, will not be run on a suitably updated map
or
b) the area has been re-mapped by the surveyor is not covered by insurance / the OS is possibly being denied its lawful copyright fee / the event registration process (which I believe requires a map registration number) is not working correctly.

Re: Map Registrations
b is more likely true than a.
From the info provided, we do not know whether the map has been updated or not. It may be up to date, but unregistered. (a)
But as an unregistered map the event will not be covered by BOF insurance (b).

Re: Map Registrations
Do you mean that there is no map registered to the event or that the map itself is not registered?
If it is the event, well you can register the basic details in the BOF database and the officials (Planner/Controller) and possibly course fees and details without assigning a map to an event.
Map registration and organiser details are on the same menu so if the organiser details are available, then something has gone awry.
If the event is in the next 12 months, it should have a controller appointed already and an assessment for suitability of the area very soon- at which point non registration of the map might be picked up?

Re: Map Registrations
The introduction of the requirement for the map used at an event to be registered seems to raise potential difficulties as there are some situations in which it would be reasonable to use a map which cannot be registered.
A specific situation I am thinking of is an existing map originally made for a local authority (and hence not registered with BOF). However there may be other cases such as if a club were to use a professional mapper who is not a BOF member (I think I saw something on Nopesport about Czech based mappers prepared to work in the UK - would they be BOF members?).

Re: Map Registrations
There is never a reason why a map can not be registered.
Even if it is done for a local authority (and so references their OS licence) you can register the map (and should unless you have your own insurance).
If a map is produced by a mapper covered by his own insurance and is done without any reference to OS data (better leave the location GR off then !) then registatrion could be ignored. However surely, beyond any quasi-legal requirements, isn't it best to register the map to advertise the the breadth of the sport's portfolio and help demonstrate the bodies that partly fund the spoprt that they do ge a lot for their input.

I had been under the impression that the mapper being an identified BOF member was a requirement for registration. I have now checked both the descriptions of the map registration scheme I can see on the BOF website (neither of which appears to reflect the current situation) and agree that they do not include this requirement.
I hope the design of the web-based system being introduced does not inadvertently introduce any such requirements.
