sitting at my desk waiting for the christmas break to begin, i thought I would see if I could apply a handicap to the club members BOF ranking points to come up with a club ranking list, adujsted for age and sex etc.
Used the handicaps we normally use at scores and street races, but the results look very skewed away from M21s towards the elder ladies
Just wondered if anyone has any realistic handicap factors. The handicaps I used were an average of the age related running handicaps and the normal O handicaps

Re: Club rankings from bof rankings
I wrote an article which was published in the June 2010 Compass Sport. It was entitled "Who is the best orienteer in Britain?" and it explained how I normalised the Ranking List for age and gender. I then published the adjusted top 100. This would be the ideal basis for working out a combined club ranking. The adjusted list did not seem to suffer from a bias towards particular age groups. One word of warning - realistic normalisation is virtually impossible for juniors. I did include M/W16 in my adjustments but I think that was pushing it a bit. I would have preferred to only go down to M/W18 but the ranking list had just been expanded.
The key to the adjustment was to realise that you can't just apply a straight factor to the ranking points as they are not proportional to speed (they are some way off). The article explains how I got round it. If you really want to carry out this exercise then you could use the graphs in the article as a rough guide. For a more exact approach you would have to indicate some way I could send you the raw figures but this may not be possible until after Christmas.

Re: Club rankings from bof rankings
Our club just holds a simple link on the club website which produces a filtered BOF ranking list which contains the club members,
http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/index.php?pg=rankings&club=36&pagesize=100
Haven't had a request yet suggesting we should apply a fiddle factor to adjust the points to try to get fair comparisons. Don't let's go there ~ such factors are always controversial.
What would be nice however would be if BOF enhanced their ranking system so that we could also filter by Region. For me ranking would be more interesting if you are shown in lists which contain the people you compete against regularly. Perhaps a future BOF enhancement ?

I too think this would be a great feature and believe I may have mentioned it elsewhere. It is probably especially valuable for those of us in smaller clubs. To whom should we direct these suggestions in order for them to be taken up?

The Rankings Working Party was working along similar lines and, indeed, did report that
The ranking scheme could be used in other ways to create calendar-defined leagues or trophy competitions, either at a national or more local level. Such an approach, if sufficiently promoted and resourced, could provide additional competition incentives within the sport.
However, this (and other features) came into the "bells and whistles" category and, at the time, we were just trying to get the scheme up and running so postponement was the order of the day.
Let's wait until the transfer of the rankings scheme to the new website and the long awaited corrections to the algorithm settle down, and then consider what enhancements we might wish to propose.
