Yes, When I started orienteering, I just used to guestimate at 1.609344. Now it seems that would have been an overestimate for a cross country style course (if I hadn't made so many errors
)

How weird - thats the exact same factor I use when talking to people at work on a Monday when they ask "How far did you run?" However, to make it easier for them, I then have to convert it into miles which they tend to understand better. I agree though, it is a bit of an overestimate but it usually impresses them and makes my time more respectable so I don't worry too much.
