The MDOC Charity event this year will give all proceeds to the Lakes Mountain Rescue Teams, a choice prompted by events at the OMM in 2008.
Fun event in Lyme Park near Stockport Sat 2nd January, mass start, 3 courses for pretty wide age classes - with a handicap system within the age classes to give the older ones a chance. Prizes for all winners. Good fun and attendence is growing year by year.http://www.mdoc.org.uk for fuller details.
Also a raffle with masses of prizes.
Free to enter the race and the park but all donations and raffle proceeds to the Mountain Rescue Teams.
Come and show your support for the people you hope you never need to call.

I thought that the whole point of OMM 2008 was that the mountain rescue was not needed?

Jon, take a look at the screening of Living Dangerously (link in Stogetta post) and you will realise they were involved.
They were not involved to the extent that the media made out at the time.
Regardless of whether they were involved or not, it's still a good cause.

Unless a big load (of snow) dumps on Lyme Park between now and Saturday, the fund raiser is still on.
Some good courses planned by Tom Fellbaum, mix of very runable open, woods and rougher fell.

Re: MDOC Charity event 2010 - Lakes Mountain Rescue Teams
I can assure you the local rescue teams were involved over the weekend.
And there was a lot of man hours spent in the area
Here is an extract from Cockermouth Mountain rescue team incident list
45 25 Oct A 52 year old man from Nottingham slipped and fell whilst competing in the OMM mountain marathon event fracturing his leg. Weather conditions at the time were appalling with torrential rain and gale force winds. The casualty was stretchered to Honister from where an ambulance took him to West Cumberland Hospital.
46 25 Oct A competitor in the OMM mountain marathon event was reported by another party to be in poor condition in a tent high on Hindscarth. Team members located the casualty and took him and his colleague down to the valley in dreadful weather conditions.
47 25 Oct A marshal in the OMM mountain marathon became hypothermic in appalling weather conditions. He was taken to safety by team members.
48 26 Oct Team members were asked by the Police to assist in an aerial search of the fell tops with an RAF helicopter, mainly in the Buttermere, Borrowdale and Wasdale areas. This was part of the process in confirming all competitors in the OMM mountain marathon event had been accounted for as safe and well.
There was not a significant proportion competing. probably 6 teams at the most.
I would have been competing but was on my way to Florida and if not competing would have been involved in the rescues
I hope the event at manchester goes well.

In the words of Victor Meldrew "I don't believe it!"
Todays fund raiser was called of due to snow, at the last minute. The entry to the park was closed for a time, and the access road was "interesting" for anyone without 4WD. Parts of the courses also had snow hiding sheet ice.
Many thanks to all competitors who did make it and sorry we couldn't go ahead, if any would like a refund of their generous donations please PM me within a week.
And thanks to all helpers especially control placers who unfortunately had to place and collect in heavy snow.
