Road running's worse - decent trainers only last around 600 miles, so if you're running marathons and the like you'd get through 2 pairs a year at least, at a cost of £50 to £100 each, more expensive than many O-shoes.

What!! I was paying this sort of money for my lads shoes 10 years ago. With two of them in the GB Squad it cost us an arm and a leg to keep them in shoes - training shoes (in preference to jobby "trainers", road shoes, O shoes etc. They went through at least 2 pairs of each a year. Think we kept the shoe companies in business

Fast growing teenage feet. Feet that are only the the right shape for one particular style of O-shoes, limiting the chance to shop around. Feet that aren't the same shape as older sibling so can't pass down O-shoes. Urban races, dobs for grip, other O-shoes for where dobs aren't allowed or appropriate, trainers for indoor training at club nights. The shoe industry need not fear for its future because I think we've taken over from Tatty in propping it up.

Personally I wouldn't call any of these '***' shoes', but each to their own!

oops. I wasn't moaning about the cost of shoes. I could, if I wanted, refuse to pay for them and offspring would have to squeeze into cheaper ill-fitting shoes and risk long term problems. I don't do that because money spent on appropriate footwear is not money I begrudge spending. Likewise, if it is going to cost the South West that much money to put on an excellent JK then that's what it costs. They shouldn't have to make a loss on the event any more than shoe manufacturers should be expected to sell me shoes below cost.

These rest are all lightweight shoes. With lightweight comes a lack of durability, longlivity and support.

You're lucky, epocian, to be able to run in lightweight racing shoes. I had to give up running in such like 25 years ago, when it started destroying my knees and lower leg. Going back to your original point about £50-100 shoes being overexpensive, I would certainly like to be able to find a trainer with enough support under £50, but haven't managed for some years.

Agree with mharky re the training. I don't think our club do enough training events and think that for local events we probably should have training exercises at each event, maybe concentrating on something different each time. That might be more useful to develop new orienteers and improve the existing ones.
Most runners after all spend most of their time training and just do a few races.
The competitions are fun though.

I always felt the same way, but this is what my club used to do on evenings in the summer a few years back and the turnout was very poor. It seems as if established orienteers, in the main, aren't very interested in training - or maybe it's just those around here.
