If the map isn't up to standard, is downgrading the event really a solution?

Imagine it was the British Sprints or BEOC, for example: maps often aren't available all that long before the event,

If the map for BEOC wasn't available a long time in advance then there would be something way wrong with the organisation... the controller should be on site with a draft map (at least) a year in advance! (I know for a fact this is the case for BOC / BEOC 2010 )

Interesting how the thread mutated from the provision of free OS data to a critique of the state of British mapping.

In answer to the original topic - the data provided is mainly for use with web sites and of little interest to those making orienteering maps.

In answer to the secondary point - yes the major events should set the standard with the best maps providing the best competition. The guidelines for major events state that a draft map should be available 12 months in advance of the event. This allows for any inadequacies to be identified and corrected and should obviate inappropriate scales from being used (i.e 1:7500 for Long distance events). Clearly this does not happen. Hopefully the Major Events panel will be able to insist on the guidelines being followed in future and identify problems early enough to be able to deal with them.
