Worth commenting that I was being rather pessimistic about LED output in that thread (if you haven't already gathered from more recent comments) - my quad LED running at ~11W total input power blows away my previous overvolted 20W halogen. That's with rather old tech Q2 bin LEDs (they were absolute state of the art when I got them having got some of the very first batch on pre-order and waiting months for them).
Anyway, given renewed interest from various places, I'll take some piccys of my current setup and put up some preliminary build info - might finally get round to doing the build your own LED headlamp article some time in the summer when I make an uprated version.

Re: head torch power
Have you tried the "Cutter MR11 Housing"?
Is it lightweight enough to be attached to your head and used whilst running?

£250 is a bit steep for the amount of night orienteering I do and the quality of my running. What do people recommend nearer the £50 end? I'm currently using an old caving type Petzl that is definitely on the dim side.

Try the Silva L1 or L2. Review on this link.

I have used it successfully for the last couple of years.
You can get it for about £50 if you shop around.

Or for something a bit more recent try the Petzl Myo RXP: http://en.petzl.com/petzl/LampesProduits?Produit=667. Available for around £65.
Programmable - so you can select regulated output for either 1 hour or 2 hours depending on how long you expect to be out.
I found it fine at BNC.

Re: head torch power
I have my £4 B&Q headlamp modified to include new optics and 3x R2 LEDs with a big heatsink that gets really hot! I'm using a bFlex driver.
Any recommendations on batteries? I have some old NiMh D-Cells but maybe I should take this opportunity to look at Li Ion or Li Polymer?
Any suggestions on cells?
TIA
