Sport England - Waste of Money?

I could have been a stereotypical orienteer for Sport England's website. White, middle class, beard (sometimes), glasses, 54 years old, IT job (GIS/Renewable Energy). Waiting for the call.

And their precis does not repeat in the body what is in the title.

and then there is the phrase 'which sporting interventions are likely to be successful....'

Sorry - not going to join in this stereotypical Sport England bashing.
I've seen much worse efforts at market segmentation (commercially confidential of course)

Whatever you might think of the profiles, some of the conclusions might be relevant - such as that M/W21s are looking for a social aspect to sport and don't care too much about the cost. I guess this can help to explain why events like the Orientator are popular. Food for thought, anyway.

We used the profiles at the recent YHOA Development conference. They are interesting, somewhat amusing, full of irrelevant data, but occasionally quite accurate.

Whatever they cost to produce isn't especially important now, as the money has been spent. Since the profiles are freely available, why not at least try to see whether you can get some benefits from them?

Guess I've taken a very strong dislike to the jargon 'interventions', which is not a stereotypical bashing of a single organisation but outright concern that the underlying premise is to meddle - 'we're doing it for your own good, honey' - and you have little say in it.

Facilitate, mitigate, ameliorate. The language of co-operation between all concerned. If we have to use jargon at all.

Now my next rant is about the term 'strategies' ....... 'our strategies for putting up the club tent are, a) take it out of its bag; b) unfold it.....etc' to use a fake topical illustration.

When you look at the "Towns such as" section it reveals some pretty unpleasant regional stereotyping which leads me to the conclusion that I am unlikely to find anything of great value if I look further.

I'm not sure what one is meant to do with these segments. Are they meant to represent the whole population, or particular target groups. If the latter, why those groups? And if the former, why does none of them come even remotely close to either of us?

To summarise - even though I understand the concept of segmentation (I did do Leisure Marketing at Masters level), I can't see the point of this particular exercise.
